Heroin Treatment

There are now three traditional ways to stop heroin:

1)   “Cold Turkey.” This method is simply stopping the opiate you are using and trying to tough it out on your own or with the help of a few over the counter medications and or some prescription medications.

2)   Methadone: This mediation has been around for a very long time and is a replacement for the heroin or other opiate.

The benefit of methadone is that it is controlled by the government and it is taken orally and does not have, in general, the “getting high” effects of heroin.

3)   Buprenorphine: See: http://buprenorphine.samhsa.gov/about.html

4)   Another, much less used drug, is Naltrexone. This is very similar to buprenorphine but has shown to be not as effective in some people. See: https://store.samhsa.gov/shin/content/SMA12-4444/SMA12-4444.pdf

Any of these methods should be accompanied by a long term rehab plan.
